Parametric EQ 2 is the go-to tool for balancing frequencies and removing unwanted noise from your sounds. This guide explains how to use its visual interface to clean up your mix.
Follow these steps
Understand the Interface
Insert the plugin onto a Mixer track. The horizontal axis represents frequency (Low to High), and the vertical axis represents volume (Gain).
Apply a High Pass Filter
Identify a band (1-7) and change its 'Filter Type' by right-clicking the token. Use a 'High Pass' filter on non-bass instruments to remove low-end rumble.
Boost or Cut Frequencies
Drag a band token up or down to boost or cut a frequency. Scroll the mouse wheel while hovering over a token to adjust the 'BW' (bandwidth or Q).
Create Spectral Space
Watch the real-time analyzer to see where instruments overlap. Carve out a small 'hole' in the melody's frequencies to let the vocals or lead shine through.
Common mistakes
- Using 'Solo' mode too much while EQing, which prevents you from hearing how the sound fits the mix.
