How to Program Kick, Snare, and Hi-Hat Patterns in FL Studio
Learn the fundamentals of beat construction using the FL Studio Step Sequencer. This guide covers basic drum placement for a solid rhythm.
This guide teaches you how to build a foundational rhythm section using the Step Sequencer. You will learn to place kicks, snares, and hats to create a standard 4-bar loop.
Follow these steps
Open the Channel Rack
Locate the Channel Rack and ensure your drum samples are loaded. Drag and drop samples from the Browser if the rack is empty.
Sequence the Kick Drum
Left-click the first step of each red and gray block for a 'four-on-the-floor' feel. Alternatively, place them on steps 1 and 9 for a standard half-time groove.
Add the Snare or Clap
Place your snare or clap on the 5th and 13th steps of the sequencer. This provides the 'backbeat' essential for most modern electronic and urban genres.
Program the Hi-Hats
Right-click the Hi-Hat channel button and select 'Fill each 2 steps'. This creates a consistent eighth-note rhythm instantly.
Common mistakes
- Placing all instruments in a single pattern instead of splitting them for easier arrangement.
- Forgetting to assign each drum sample to its own Mixer track for processing.
